SELF AMALGAMATING TAPES

SELF AMALGAMATING TAPES

A range of tapes which amalgamate (bond together) when applied under tension as an insulation wrap. They become a homogeneous, void-free mass without need for external heat or pressure.
The main applications are for high voltage electrical insulation, moisture proofing and corrosion prevention for telecommunication and other industrial uses.

The tapes are flexible and versatile in application. They can be easily applied by hand, contouring closely to irregular shapes and bends to form a permanent insulation layer or waterproofing barrier.

The life of the tapes exposed out of doors in the UK is expected to be several years. In enclosed locations, such as cables, the durability should be at least equal to that of the cables. Where tape may be subject to abrasion or exposure to weather an external covering with a high quality pPVC tape is recommended.

The most important tapes out of an extensive range are:

250l PIB Self Amalgamating Tape

For jointing/splicing and repair of a wide range of power and distribution cables up to 46kV. Used by postal and telecommunication authorities in conjunction with pPVC insulation tapes for making watertight seals, both above and below ground. Tapes can be applied for protection against corrosion on metal pipe work and waterproofing of electrical components.

2515/25l7 EPR Self Amalgamating Tape

For jointing/splicing and repair of a wide range of solid dielectrical power cables up to 69kV. Also used for insulating and waterproofing electrical components and connections at lower voltages. Can be used in conjunction with pPVC insulation tape.

2547 EPR Self Amalgamating Tape

2547 is an insulating, self-amalgamating tape based on EPR (Ethylene Propylene Rubber). Its colour is black.

APPLICATIONS:

  • For jointing and repairing power cables up to 69 kV.
  • For insulation, waterproofing and protection of electrical connections (e.g. satellite ‘dish’).
  • For binding and sealing for the continuity of the lead sheath.

PRODUCT BENEFITS:

  • Excellent physical and electrical properties with a high degree of stability under conditions of use.
  • The tape amalgamates rapidly when applied under tension to provide a void-free homogeneous wrapping, without the need for external heat or pressure.
  • Excellent resistance to water, UV and ozone.
  • The tape will remove cleanly when cut, allowing it to be used as temporary insulation or protection.
  • The product is approved to EDF HN 26-S-04.
  • Meets specification UTE C 33-011.
  • Service temperature -40 °C to +100°. Overload temperature 120° C.
  • Supplied in an easy to handle and apply tape form. The product is interleaved with a disposable plastic liner.

  • Core: 38mm dense plastic
  • Packaging: Individually shrink-wrapped rolls

STANDARD PRESENTATION:
Care should be taken to avoid direct contact between the tape and petroleum-type solvents and oils. Oils may affect the electrical properties of the tape.
The rolls should be stored flat on their cut edges in the original packaging. The product must be protected from dust, heat, moisture, direct sunlight and solvent fumes. Storage temperature between +10°C and +30°C. Under these conditions, the storage life of the tape in a temperate climate will be at least five years.
