SPLICING TAPES – Web Splicing

SPLICING TAPES

Web splicing of paper – board – foil in the converting industry

In the processing of paper, board or foils the initial stage involves conveying these materials over transport rollers for further conversion. The materials come in rolls of 2m wide (or wider) and in roll lengths which can be several thousand meters long. The manufacturing process is continuous, which requires the end of one roll to be spliced quickly to the start of the next roll. Two types of splices can be employed.

A ‘butt splice‘ requires the end of one roll to be placed directly against the start of the next roll and the gap will require a single sided adhesive tape to join or splice the two ends together. This needs a strip of tape to be placed on the top and reverse side of the join.

An ‘overlapping splice‘ overlaps the end of one roll over the start of the next roll and this overlap is jointed together with a double-sided adhesive tape (adhesive on both sides of the tape).

A wide range of adhesive tapes can be considered for such processes. The choice depends on the application requirements. Some processes involve the material and the tape to withstand considerable temperatures. Other splices will have to cope with high tension arising from the web conveyance.

The required tape properties are achieved through the selection of the right combination of the carrier of the tape and the adhesive applied to it. These structured can be based on:

Carriers Adhesives
Polyester Silicone
Paper Acrylic
Cellulose Rubber Resin
Tissue (for double sided only) Hot Melt
Transfer (for double sided only) Hot Melt

The range of Splicing Tapes offers an exceptional choice of adhesive tapes to meet all customer requirements.

Lithographic and Double Sided tapes

GRAPHICS INDUSTRY
Lithographic and Double Sided tapes
Red Lithographic Tapes are used in the masking out and stripping up photographic films and negatives. Opaque to UV and short wavelength visible light make these tapes ideal for the purpose. Based on PVC film, the tape is completely water and humidity resistant.

A Blue Transparent Cellulose based Lithographic Tape is in the range with the useful property of being highly visible but completely transparent to light from exposure lamps. Additionally there is a very clear PP Tape with excellent dimensional stability and non-oozing acrylic adhesive for edge mounting film positives. Double Sided tapes can be provided for ‘under surface’ mounting of positive and negative films.

PHOTOFINISHING TAPES 1630 series

Polyester Silicone / Rubber Resin Tape
Based on a clear polyester tape with a silicone/rubber resin adhesive, this tape has been specially formulated for attaching film to leader card on all automatic photo developing and printing machines. The tape offers high tack and high chemical and UV resistance. It does not leave any residue on the leader card when removed.

SPLICING TAPES FOR RELEASE PAPERS

SPLICING TAPES FOR RELEASE PAPERS

A unique range of single sided self-adhesive tapes for splicing surface treated release/casting papers as used in the manufacture of SYNTHETIC LEATHER. The system consists of:

For PU and PVC Casting Papers use:

TOP SPLICE

The tapes available for the top splice have a special release coat on the tape surface which ensures easy removal of the synthetic leather from the splice.

BACK SPLICE

A choice of 3 paper based tapes with very specific properties and easy to apply. Recommended for both PU and PVC release papers.

TOP SPLICE TAPES
BACK SPLICE TAPES

General Properties and Application

1). The tape surface of 88-06 and 88-01 has been specially treated to ensure seperation of the synthetic leather from the splice in the same way as it separates from the release paper. This ensures continuous production of synthetic leather, with no downtime there is a production cost saving.

2). All tapes are easy to apply. Application with our free Plastic Applicator is recommended for a secure bond, including heavily embossed papers. Under cold conditions a warm iron can be moved over the splice to enhance adhesion. For the Back Splice abrasion of the release paper prior to applying the Back Splice will improve adhesion further.

3). The Splicing Tapes will withstand the temperature conditions encountered in the production of synthetic leather and will last through six or seven production cycles. What this means is that the tape can go through the production process 6-7 times, so when the casting paper is reused, the tape can also be reused too.

4). The Splicing Tapes can be stored up to 12 months prior to use, but they must be stored in dry conditions at around 22 deg C inside the original packaging. Protection from water/humidity, extreme temperatures and direct sunlight is necessary.

5). Note that PVC is cured at higher temperatures than PU. High tension occurs in the casting paper if production passes at high speed with high temperature, alternatively not if this passes through at lower speeds at lower temperatures. The tension could also be the way the line has been setup which the operator would know.

6). Our Customer Care Service is outstanding. Dispatch can be arranged worldwide by airfreight immediately after receipt of order.
